A gallery entrance in Beijing's 798 arts district
Next weekend, I'm leaving Beijing for a while. For nearly two months I'll be filming as I retrace the route I took when researching paper in Southeast Asia, and finalize the last steps of the handmade version of my book. I'm kicking it off with a 30-hour train ride to see some gigantic ancient frescoes near Nanning, en route to Hanoi.
Leaving wherever home is makes me miss its comforts, the familiar patterns of days and weeks. Schedules memorized enough to be forgotten, just lived. Leaving for a while is just the ticket to appreciating it all over again when you return.
